Matter Queer Space Manitoba Inc. (Matter) is a not-for-profit, volunteer-run, and donation-supported Two-Spirit, Queer, and Trans Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour (2SQTBIPOC) -mandated art gallery, library, and queer community programming space. Matter centres 2SQTBIPOC art, literature, and 2SLGBTQIA+ people.
Mission: Our mission is to uplift, represent, and celebrate the voices and creativity of 2SQTBIPOC communities through a 2SQTBIPOC-mandated art gallery and library, and diverse programs and activities that foster connection, learning, and wellness for the entire 2SLGBTQIA+ community.
Vision: We envision a world without barriers, where 2SQTBIPOC and 2SLGBTQIA+ identities are seen, heard, and celebrated in all areas of art, literature, and community spaces.
Why does Matter matter?
2SQTBIPOC (Two-Spirit, Queer, Trans, Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) are often overlooked or underrepresented in art, literature, and queer spaces. Matter stands out by prioritizing the equitable representation of 2SQTBIPOC voices, seeing this as a vital step toward collective liberation.
Collective liberation is the idea that true freedom is interconnected and can only be realized when all people—regardless of identity—are free from oppression. In the context of queer identities, this means addressing the multiple layers of discrimination faced by those who are marginalized not just by their sexual orientation or gender, but also by other intersecting aspects of their identity.
At Matter, we believe art and literature are powerful tools for social change. We are committed to uplifting and supporting queer artists, writers, and creators whose work furthers the movement for collective liberation. We are committed to cultivating a space where it’s possible to imagine and create liberatory futures.
Through grants, donations, community care, and mutual aid, Matter strives to create an inclusive, barrier-free space where art, literature, and opportunities are accessible to all.
