A Note on Accessibility
We recognize and understand that 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals with disabilities often face barriers to accessing queer spaces. Currently, Matter is only accessible by stairs, but we are working to change that. We are actively seeking grants to improve accessibility to the lower-level space. In the interim, we are exploring opportunities to partner and collaborate with other galleries and spaces that are fully accessible.
Whenever possible, we offer:
- Mask-mandated events and hours
- Virtual programming and gallery viewing
- Livestreamed events
- Online library
- Curbside book pick up and drop off
Thank you for your patience and support as we work toward a more accessible, inclusive, and equitable future for Matter.
Accessing the Matter Space
The main entrance to Matter is off Graham Avenue, directly across the street from Bison Books. The primary signage at the front of the building reads “Revolution Wellness Centre” with signage for Matter Queer Space Manitoba Inc. on the window to the right of the door.
To enter, ring the doorbell that is next to the door. Wait to hear the door click before pushing the door open. You will enter into the lobby of the main floor business, which includes a seating area to the right and a front counter to the left. If the main floor business is open, inform the person at the front desk that you are there for Matter Manitoba.
To access the main Matter space, you will go through the open doorway and all the way down the hall, towards the back door. The stairs to Matter will be on your left. The stairwell is narrow and there is a hand railing. Once you are at the bottom of the stairs, the main Matter space will be to your left.
The first space you will enter is the Matter 2SQTBIPOC Library. The Matter 2SQTBIPOC Gallery is accessed by passing through the Library space and then through a doorway. The floor in the Gallery is raised, resulting in a slight step up.
Washrooms
There is one fully accessible, gender-inclusive washroom with grab bars on the main floor and one small, gender-inclusive washroom on lower level (with menstrual products, safer sex supplies, and sharps disposal available).
